Automatic sorting systems (sorters)

Sorting large volumes of product accurately is one of the operations with the greatest impact on the cost and service level of a distribution center. At DEVA we integrate automatic sorting systems that send every box, parcel or item to its destination (route, store, dock or order) at high speed and with minimal manual intervention. The right technology depends on the type of product, the volume and the available space.

Automatic sorting line: boxes move along the sorter belt and slide down discharge chutes onto roller conveyors

What is a sorter and how does it work?

A sorter is a system that identifies each item (by barcode, vision or RFID), conveys it and automatically diverts it to its assigned destination. Every sorting system is made up of four stages: induction (orderly feeding of the product), identification (reading and destination assignment), sortation (the divert itself) and discharge (exit to a chute, container or conveyor).

What type of sorter does your operation need?

TechnologyCapacityIdeal for
Cross-Belt Up to 3 m/s · 99.99% accuracy Maximum volume and variety; from documents to parcels of 80 kg
Shoe Sorter Up to 18,000 parcels/h Parcels and boxes at high speed
Narrow Belt Medium speed Boxes and standard product with a moderate investment
Pop-Up Wheel Up to 6,000 parcels/h · 50 kg Medium capacity, bidirectional, easy to integrate
AMR Sortation Robots Scalable by fleet Total flexibility, a first step into automation
Irregular Parcel Sorter Up to 79.4 kg · 2.74 m Extra-large loads: buckets, tires, rolls
Pre-sorting ("Hive") Multiple inputs and outputs Group by destination before the main sorter

How we choose the right technology

We do not start from a catalog: we analyze your product mix, the volume per hour, the number of destinations, the available space and your growth projection. With that data we size the system (including induction, control software and discharge) and propose the technology that best solves your case.

Proven technology, integrated into your operation

We integrate sorting systems from manufacturers with over 40 years of experience in this technology, whose equipment runs in critical parcel, postal and e-commerce hubs worldwide. As always at DEVA, we do not start from a predefined product: we select the technology that best solves your case.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sorter?
It is an automatic sorting system that identifies each item and diverts it to its assigned destination, at high speed and with minimal manual intervention.
What types of sorters are there?
The main ones are cross-belt, shoe sorter, narrow belt (parallel belts), pop-up wheel (retractable wheels) and systems based on autonomous mobile robots (AMR).
Which is the fastest sorter?
The cross-belt reaches speeds of up to 3 m/s with 99.99% accuracy, and the shoe sorter up to 18,000 parcels per hour.
Which one suits me if I am only starting to automate?
AMR-based systems let you start with minimal infrastructure and scale by adding robots, without major civil works.
